Keeping applications current and up to date is a pre-requisite to maintaining a secure, virus free system. This is particularly true with security programs such as anti-virus applications. Understanding that there are reasons to delay moving to new versions, I decided to keep this FAQ online for a reasonable period of time after Avast's release of version 5. I know that even companies that want to be on the cutting edge don't want to bleed and they would rather wait until the reviews are out about new versions, wait until licenses need renewed, or until system refresh occurs.
After starting Avast! anti-virus from the Start Menu
1) Click the arrow shown
2) Select Schedule Boot-Time Scan
3) Click the Schedule button, and I recommend checking the Scan archive files as well.
4) Select Yes
Note: The boot-time scan is not available to 64-bit versions of Windows. This FAQ was updated on a 32-bit Windows 7 system using the Snipping Tool for screen captures.
Installation Tips: If connected to the Internet with anything but a Dial-up connection, be sure to get into Settings/Update (Connections) and select "My computer is permanently connected to the Internet." I also go to Sounds and Disable avast! sounds. Sounds are profile specific, be sure to do this for others that might be logged on and get startled when a voice booms that it's been updated!
